Tot-Book – Bug’s Life

by on May 21, 2010 – 10:22 am11 Comments

Lapbook-ing is a great tool to use to do thematic learning. Learning on a certain topic in depth without having to plough through loads of text books, working on worksheets without feeling the bore of filling into a workbook. This is learning made fun! Above all, a field trip or a hands-on activity could be thrown into the learning process to make the experience even more complete.

For a toddler, it will be as fun if we could weave in age appropriate activities in a lapbook format, filled with pictures, colours and hands-on learning aids only difference is, it's half the size of a regular lapbook. I learned about Tot-Book through Carisa of 1+1+1=1 sometime ago. Have picked up some tips from her and made a Tot-Book based on the theme of Ants, to play & learn with my Little Missy.

In this Tot-Book, I've added the matching of upper case & lower case letters, size sequencing, numbers & quantities, colours  and shapes.

It's my labour of love as lots of hours have been spent on putting this Tot-Book together. I am sharing it here as a free resource (download it here), may you find it useful as you play and learn with your child. Throw in a movie time together as you and your little one watch "The Bug's Life" together!

Have fun learning!

    Hi!

Thanks you so much for sharing all the resources/materials!

It really helps me to get about learning with Dylan =)

One question- since some of the teaching materials require laminating, do you bring them out for laminating or you own one? as i forsee most shop staff won’t make the extra effort to help in arranging the small cut-outs before doing the lamination.

will it be easier and cost-effective to own one instead?

    Hi,

I have downloaded the PDF file, but it’s set at locked doc, unable to print.

Hi Linette, Thanks very much for your kind compliments :)

    Hi Rachel,

Thanks for alerting us about the problem you’ve experienced. I’ve made the changes to the settings, you should be able to download it now :)

As for your queries, yes, I do have a laminating machine at home as it’s definitely more cost effective in the long run. To be honest, for the past 2 years, the laminating machine has been the best investment for me because of the countless learning aids I’ve made out of it ;) it’s quite economical nowadays, can easily get one not more than $80 from the Popular Bookstore.

If you don’t have a laminating machine, you could just use hard card stock to print some of the elements that requires more usage to keep it more durable. Hope that helps. :)

    Hi Pauline,

Thank you so much! the download is printable now :)

After seeing your sharing, the more reason it is for me to get a laminating machine. ;p

since I’ve a 16 mths old, it makes sense to have the learning aids laminated.

Hi, just wanna share … laminating machines are pretty affordable these days. I got one a few years ago and these machines were over $150 then. These days, I see them at much lesser than $100.

Hi Pauline, wanting to ask abt the velcro strips u used. Whr do u buy them and is it the stick-on kind? How do u ensure they are still stuck-on after usage? I find these are rather expensive in the household shops near my place … 1m for $3, I think.

  • PaulineNo Gravatar says:

Hi Kheng Yan, yeah, the laminating machines these days are really much more affordable. I got mine $99 and it’s served me very well for more than 3 years now :)

As for the velcro strip, I used to purchase them from Daiso and I got some from the Popular bookstore. These days I just buy them off the DIY shops at the market nearby my place it’s about $2.40 for 2m (if i remember correctly). I think the sticky tape is pretty strong so far I haven’t encountered any problems with the velcro coming off after my kids’ rough usage.

Hi Pauline, can email me the shop name and address?? Is it near the hawker place? I’m sending hubby over there … $2.40 for 2m is cheap!! I’ve been putting off making anything coz partly of this …

  • PaulineNo Gravatar says:

Kheng Yan, I have not noticed what’s the shop’s name but it’s a household/DIY shop that’s near to Prime Gym (Lor 7), next to the confectionary – facing the food centre. Is that description sufficient?

Hi Pauline, hubby went to check shop out yesterday. It’s $1 for 20″ w/o double-sided tape and so about $2 for 1metre.
