Learning to Read : Beginning and Ending Consonants

by on July 28, 2010 – 2:30 pmNo Comment

It has been almost a year since K started on the alphabet lessons, and he has learnt almost 75% of all the sounds of the alphabets. So is he ready to learn how to blend letters? Most likely. However I am still taking our alphabet lessons at snail's pace to let him thoroughly enjoy his journey of learning.

Apart from teaching him the alphabetic principle, we spend time in between to read aloud rhyming books, play rhyming games, as well as beginning and ending consonant sounds games. Here are some activities I use to teach beginning and ending consonants :

1. Toss a sound

Create a grid with 20 consonants on 'mahjong paper' or use styrofoam alphabet mats, have the child toss the beanbag on a letter on a grid and then get him/her to call out a word that begins or end with the letter the bean bag lands on.  You can also try a variation of this game by laying out picture cards face down on the floor. Child picks up a picture card on the pile and then tries to toss the bean bag on the letter that begins or end with the sound. You can use picture cards with illustrations or with pictures and letters underneath

2. Posting the Sound

Using the same picture cards, Stick letters of the alphabet on 5 boxes. Cut a slit in each box to make it look like a post box. Hand out picture cards to the child. He/She must listen to the word on the card, identify what sound the word begins or ends with and choose which box to put the card into.

3. First Sound First

Ask the child to listen to the following set of words: sat, send, sick. Point out that all these words start with the same sound. The sound is /s/. Tell the child that you want him/her to listen carefully to each new set of words you say and tell them what the first sound is.

Example : "Can you tell me what the first sound is in fish, foot, fan? What other words do you know that begin with /f/?"

You can extend this activity by having the child to listen for the last sound.

Example : "Can you tell me what the last sound is in foot, bat, pet? Yes, it's /t/. What other words do you know end with /t/?

4. Beginning sounds interactive cards with Hot Dots Pen

5. Printables to select beginning or ending sounds.

Have fun trying out these beginning and ending sounds activities with your child!
