Lapbook Learning : Angus Lost
Literature based learning a method of learning we've adopted in our home since the kids were little. I love reading and I wanted my children to grow up enjoy reading and loving books as well. As reading always open ones mind to a new experience through imagination and fascination.
When Tim was just a few months' old, I discovered the world of BFIAR (Before Five In A Row), and was introduced to many wonderful books through this homeschool program. I know Tim was too young then but I wanted to get myself prepared and therefore bought the program to understand better what literature base learning was all about and how it could be applied to young children. More about selecting and reading of living books will be shared in a separate post.
One of the books recommended within BFIAR's book list was Angus Lost. It's a story about curious Angus who ran away from home seeking some new adventures and along the way he discovered some interesting animals and encountered some great experiences.
We embarked on the learning by reading the story book together, enjoying every page together with the kids in the reading process. To make the learning more meaningful we worked on a lapbook based on this book with a thematic studies on Dairy Farm that included lots of hands-on & play activities as well.
Here's what we did -
Made 2 separate lapbooks for the 2 kids (Little Missy was about 2 then, so I didn't want to overwhelm her with a whole load of stuff to work on, thus, I chose some age appropriate activities for her to feel involved as her brother work on a full lapbook); downloaded and printed most of the elements from here.
Here's an illustration of what was packed into the full lapbook. As for my little girl, the elements that I included in her tot book were Dog Breeds, What Colour is Angus, D is for…, Animal shape matching game and lastly Angus in the cave (all of these elements are available in the link I've shared above).
There were some elements about the different types of caves and cave animals that I've taken from MamaBrown's website alas, the website is now defunct. However, here's another link that was recorded by a mom on their learning through the same story book and lapbook which might inspire you.
We also did a thematic studies on Dairy Farm, and here's a video of the fun we had in our journey of learning through the book "Angus Lost".
Have Fun Learning!
